About me

Originally from Northern Ireland, Mr. Al Getgood is a UK trained Specialist Knee Surgeon at Fortius Clinic London focussing on the full spectrum of knee surgery excluding knee replacement procedures. He has extensive experience in dealing with both professional and amateur athletes through his past roles as Chief of Surgery at the world renowned Aspetar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Clinic in Doha, Qatar, and as Fellowship Director at the internationally recognised Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine clinic in London, Ontario, Canada.

He underwent training in Edinburgh, Cambridge and Coventry before moving to Canada in 2012.

Mr Getgood's clinical practice focuses on complex soft tissue reconstruction of the knee. This spans from first time ACL reconstructions in elite/professional and recreational athletes to tertiary referral multiple revision ligament reconstruction and alignment correction to address problematic pain, instability and deformity.

He has been successful in securing over 10 million dollars in peer reviewed and industry funded grants to build his pre-clinical and clinical research program focusing on complex ligament reconstruction and joint preservation. Particular achievements include being awarded the J Edouard Samson Research award from the Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation in May 2021, the premier research award for career research in Canadian Orthopaedics. He also received the American Journal of Sports Medicine Hughston Award in 2023, the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine (AOSSM) 2019 O'Donoghue Sports Injury Award, the 2019 Jan Gillquist Award and the 2017 Albert Trillat Young Investigator award (both from the International Society of Arthroscopic Knee surgery and Orthopaedic Sports medicine -ISAKOS), all for the ISAKOS/OREF funded multicentre STABILITY study investigating the use of lateral extra-articular tenodesis in ACL reconstruction.

Mr. Getgood has authored over 225 peer-reviewed articles and numerous book chapters. He has given over 300 national and international conference presentations, lectures and demonstrations. He was the 2025 ISAKOS Biennial Congress program Chairman. Mr. Getgood is a member of the ACL Study Group, the Herodicus Society, Magellan Society, ESSKA, ICRS, MenIN Study Group and International Knee Dislocation Study Group. He was the 2019 ICRS Annual congress clinical program chair, the ACL study group program chair in 2023, deputy program chair for ISAKOS in 2023 and was a member of the program committee for ESSKA 2020 biennial congresses.
