About me

Sohier Elneil is a Consultant Urogynaecologist and Gynaecologist at University College Hospital and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London. She started her career in the field of Urogynaecology in the 1990’s. This included the specialist assessment, investigation, diagnosis and management of urinary incontinence, faecal incontinence, and utero-vaginal prolapse. All of these urogynaecological problems led her to pursue further surgical training in gynaecology, urology and aspects of colorectal surgery in order to become proficient in performing complex reconstructive pelvic floor surgery, laparoscopic continence and prolapse surgery, as well as general and complex gynaecological procedures.
Her research interest led her on to do her PhD at the University of Cambridge to study the physiology and pharmacology of sensory bladder dysfunction in women. This led to her interest in the investigation, diagnoses and treatment of patients with neurological bladder dysfunction. At the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square in London, she is the lead for the sacral neuromodulator programme for intractable bladder and pelvic floor dysfunction.
In her career in Urogynaecology and Uro-neurology over the last 10 years, as a Consultant, she has become increasingly involved in research, as well as teaching and training of junior and senior colleagues in the two specialities in the UK and further afield. This has included being an invited speaker, chairing workshops and teaching at University College London, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, the Royal College of Surgeons, the International Federation of Gynaecologists and Obstetrics and numerous professional organizations, including the European Association of Urology, International Continence Society, International Urogynaecology Association, Pan African Urological Surgeons Association and many others. In the last eight years she has worked closely with many pharmaceutical and devices companies, both in the UK, Europe and in the USA. In particular, she has been involved in devising courses and teaching sessions with Astellas, Pfizer, Allergan and Medtronic. Astellas, in particular, has had a huge impact in continuing medical education in the UK and abroad. She has been privileged to be part of UK and Global advisory board meetings for Astellas, Allergan and Medtronic, to name the principal three. She continues to work with all of them in their training programmes for specialist urologists, urogynaecologists and neurologists, and also for general practitioners, nurses and other affiliated scientific and clinical groups.
Miss Elneil is the Training Programme Director for Urogynaecology at University College London Hospitals, Clinical lead for Uro-neurology training for all UK trainees undertaking the RCOG-accredited sub-speciality training programme, Chair of the International Continence Society (ICS) Fistula Committee, Member of the ICS Standardization Committee, Member of the EAU Chronic Pelvic Pain Committee, Chair of the IUGA working group on Chronic Pelvic Pain, Author/Editor of the FIGO and partners Fistula training manual and numerous other positions. She feels privileged and honoured to have been chosen to help run and devise strategy within these groups.
Her academic aims remain the study of the neurological basis of bladder and pelvic floor dysfunction, and the determination of new therapeutic targets to improve continence and pelvic floor management in women. This will not only include the scientific basis of these conditions, but also how these conditions impact on the individual, their families and society.
