About me
Mr Skyrme is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in treating lower limb disorders dealing principally with complex hip surgery, knee replacement and knee arthroscopy, ankle disorders and forefoot surgery. Mr Skyrme trained at Guy’s Hospital where he qualified with a first class honours degree in Radiological Sciences and MBBS in 1993. Mr Skyrme then underwent surgical training at the Royal College of Surgeons at England and higher surgical training in the SE England and latterly at the famous Mater Hospital Sydney, Australia. Here he trained under on of the leading hip surgeons worldwide. Whilst in Australia Mr Skyrme specialised in complex hip surgery, young adult replacement and revision surgery.
On his return to the UK Mr Skyrme has now used these skills to set up a complex hip surgery practice both in Eastbourne and the Horder Centre in Crowborough. He is now one of the busiest joint replacement surgeons in the SE of England and his annual data can be reviewed on the NJR website (www.njrsurgeonhospitalprofile.org.uk). Last year he carried out 276 replacements (over twice the national average).
Mr Skyrme was appointed a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Eastbourne DGH, The Horder Centre and the Esperance BMI Hospital Eastbourne in 2003. Since then he has developed his practice and main areas of interest being hip, knee and foot and ankle surgery. Besides being one of the busiest joint replacement surgeons in the SE of England he has also become one of the busiest foot and ankle surgeons in the region also. He regularly carries out over 650 foot operations per year. He has developed the foot and ankle service at The Horder Centre and The Esperance and the majority of the forefoot surgery is now carried out as a day case procedure with specialist anaesthetic and surgical techniques to allow rapid recovery.
Mr Skyrme has continued to develop the hip service for Eastbourne. He has pioneered day case hip surgery in Eastbourne using special surgical and anaesthetic techniques. Some of his patients have gone home the same afternoon having had hip replacement surgery. At present his preferred hip replacement is the Corail Pinnacle hip replacement using either a ceramic on plastic bearing or a ceramic on ceramic bearing. Generally the majority of his hip replacements are uncemented.
He is the Royal College Tutor for Surgery for Eastbourne and this involves guiding / tutoring young surgeons during their training. He has been the college tutor for Eastbourne now for almost 9 years and he states that this is one of the parts of his job that gives him significant enjoyment as it involves training the surgeons of tomorrow.
