About me

Mr Cass is a Spinal surgeon based on the South Coast.
He was the first Fellowship-trained spinal specialist at the BSUH NHS Trust.
He has been instrumental in improving the profile of spinal surgery in South East England, introducing several new types of surgery & pioneering advanced techniques including minimally invasive (‘keyhole’) surgery, kyphoplasty, anterior lumbar surgery and Cervical & lumbar disc replacement. He has a special interest in non-fusion treatment of spinal conditions.
Mr Cass qualified in 1991 from Charing Cross & Westminster Medical School at the University of London.

He undertook his Specialist Training on the St Mary's & Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) rotation. He has worked with several of the UK's leading spinal surgeons, including on the RNOH spinal unit, which is highly regarded as a centre of National & International excellence.
Mr Cass decided to follow the orthopaedic surgery route to becoming a Spinal Surgeon, as it was clear to him that 95% of spinal problems are related to the structure of the spine (the vertebra, discs & joints) and most of the pioneering advances in Spinal Surgery had been made by orthopaedic spinal surgeons.
Mr Cass was awarded the prestigious position of Senior Spinal Fellow at The Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney. This is the busiest spinal unit in Australia and, again, world-renowned.

Upon returning to the UK, he was appointed to his Consultant post in Brighton, and was the senior orthopaedic spinal surgeon at the Trust until he resigned in 2017. He was made an Honorary Consultant in Spinal Surgery after he left.

He continues to have an independent spinal practice, based primarily in Brighton & Hove.

Mr Cass understands that there may be situations where patients would like reassurance and guidance to help them understand both their condition and their treatment options. He believes tin offeringr a detailed but comprehensible explanation allowing a more thorough and inclusive decision to be made.
Outside of work Mr Cass is kept busy with his family and their menagerie of chickens, bees and pigs just on the edge of the South Downs. He loves to cook, when he has the chance, especially using all our his home-produced goods. He & his family keep active with swimming, cycling, horse riding and skiing and of recent months he is being put through his paces by his young son who has developed his passion for rugby.
