About me

Mr Subramaniam is a very experienced Consultant surgeon. His NHS base is Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Trust where he is the lead for cataract surgery.
Mr Subramaniam had his initial medical and ophthalmic training in India. He relocated to the UK and trained for many years at centres of excellence first in Birmingham then Leicester and finishing as a joint Senior Registrar between Charing Cross and Moorfields Eye Hospitals in London. This was followed by advanced sub-speciality training and clinical exposure to cataract surgery and laser eye surgery.

Mr Subramaniam was in the very first cohort of surgeons assessed for competency in Laser Eye Surgery and was awarded the Certificate of competency in Laser Refractive Surgery (Royal college of ophthalmologists, 2007). He has been an examiner for various Royal College examinations including assessment of competency in Laser Refractive surgery.

Rather than being a generalist in cataract surgery Mr Subramaniam is a specialist in cataract and refractive surgery. Being trained in refractive surgery, Mr Subramaniam specializes in helping patients reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses. He is trained and certified in the uses various types of lasers for refractive eye surgery. This includes laser eye surgery in suitable people and refractive lens exchange in people unsuited for laser eye surgery. In patients with cataracts, removal of the cataract can be combined with the use of premium lenses (of which there are several types) to reduce or eliminate dependence on glasses.

The idea of using premium intra-ocular lenses for either cataract or refractive lens surgery is to help patients reduce or eliminate the need for glasses. It is a recognized fact that despite various calculations people may still be dependent on glasses after cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange with premium lenses. In suitable patients this can be simply addressed by doing laser eye surgery. Mr Subramaniam is one of the few surgeons to offer this facility locally.

He has an extensive Medico-legal practice and has a Medicolegal Foundation Certificate from Cardiff University.

Mr Subramaniam has performed several thousand cataract and laser eye surgeries and regularly audits his results. It is a matter of professional pride that year on year his complication rate is well below the national average.
