About me

I gained my primary medical degree from The University of Cambridge in 1990, and spent my early training years predominantly in the East Anglia region. Having completed my orthopaedic training on the North Trent region based in Sheffield, I spent 6 months in an upper limb Fellowship in Melbourne, Australia. I was awarded The British Elbow and Shoulder Society Travelling Fellowship Award in 2002, allowing me to visit surgeons in both South Africa and the USA.

Appointed to University Hospital of South Manchester in 2003, I have now completed 14 years as an Orthopaedic Upper Limb Consultant, maintaining full-time NHS practice as well as working in the private sector. I was appointed as Lead Clinician for the Orthopaedic department in in 2013, a post I held for over 3 years. I oversaw the establishment of UHSM as one of the 3 Major Trauma Centres for Greater Manchester, resulting in the greatest improvement in survival statistics from major trauma injuries in the UK.

I introduced the use of reverse geometry total shoulder replacements to South Manchester, and have been instrumental in the continued development of minimally invasive surgical techniques within the Trust. Along with the radiology department I introduced the use of hydrodilitation in the treatment of frozen shoulder, a technique I first saw whilst in Australia in 2002.

I am a founding member of a group of Orthopaedic specialists, OrthTeam, who collaborate on teaching GPs, physiotherapists and sports medicine doctors regularly through the year. I am also faculty on 2 national arthroscopic surgery teaching courses, one for shoulder surgery and the other elbow surgery, regularly training both junior doctors and consultants from both the UK as well as Europe. This allows me to maintain up to date techniques for minimally invasive surgeries as well as contribute to regular case discussions with other colleagues throughout the UK.

I have recently performed navigation-assisted shoulder replacement surgery and am looking to expand the use of this technique to enhance the quality of implantation of these joint replacements. I am one of a handful of shoulder surgeons in the North West that perform over 25 total shoulder replacements each year, both standard anatomical as well as reverse geometry types.

With our children entering tertiary education, it has allowed more time to keep fit, notably running, as well as continue to follow football, which was the sport I played for Cambridge University in the Varsity match in 1988, gaining a Full Blue. I also captained the 2nd XI whilst an undergraduate.
