About me

Professor Neil Gittoes is Consultant Endocrinologist at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Birmingham. He also holds a senior leadership and management role at QEHB as Associate Medical Director for Clinical Partnerships.

Professor Gittoes has over 20 years of experience in specialist endocrinology at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, one of the largest and most highly regarded endocrine centres in the UK.

He was appointed consultant in 2001 and over this time Professor Gittoes has developed a nationally recognised subspecialty interest in osteoporosis and metabolic bone diseases. He also specialises in Pituitary, Thyroid and Calcium related disorders.

In recognition of his wide clinical contributions Professor Gittoes has been recognised by award of a Gold Clinical Excellence Award.

Professor Gittoes has a broad spectrum of professional skills spanning research, teaching and leadership but at the centre of his beliefs and ethos is high quality, patient-focussed clinical care.

Professor Gittoes has multiple national roles and responsibilities within the NHS locally, regionally and nationally. He leads and contributes to many professional societies and charities at a national level. He is national lead for osteoporosis services peer review and author of the national standards for fracture prevention (National Osteoporosis Society). He co-authored the UK Guidelines on Vitamin D deficiency. Within specialised endocrinology he leads the Clinical Update Bone and Calcium strand nationally and he is Vice-Chair of the NHS England Clinical Reference Group for Specialised Endocrinology that determines the delivery of all specialised endocrinology services nationally. Professor Gittoes is vice chair of the West Midlands Clinical Senate.
He leads the NICE Clinical Guideline on Primary Hyperparathyroidism.
