Dr Coakley has been a consultant since 2000. He is no longer providing face to face consultations or working in rheumatology. He provides video consultations for people with suspected or confirmed ME/CFS, Long Covid and other post-infectious fatigue syndromes.

About me

Current NHS consultant posts held

He was Director of Medical Education at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich from 2003 to 2010, and of South London Healthcare NHS Trust from 2010 to 2013. He was Clinical Director for Rheumatology, Neurology and Dermatology at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust from 2013 to 2018. He was Chair of the British Society for Rheumatology's Education & Training Committee from 2019 to 2022. He retired from the NHS after 34 years in 2023.

Research interests

His PhD was in the molecular immunogenetics of rheumatoid arthritis and Felty's syndrome. He chaired the British Society for Rheumatology's national guideline group for the management of the hot swollen joint. His research interests are in septic arthritis and clinical research in rheumatoid arthritis.
