About me

Having been a medical student in London, I trained in orthopaedics at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, completing my training as Prof George Bentley’s Lecturer in the Academic Department of Orthopaedics at University College, London.
Towards the end of my training I worked for a year at Harvard University at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. My work in the USA was centred around primary and revision arthroplasty. It was in America that I developed a specific interest in hip arthroplasty and hip revision surgery.
In 1999, I was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the University Hospital, Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham with a specialist interest in primary and revision hip surgery. I have continued to work to progress my skills and develop my practice during my 20 years as a Consultant. I have a specialist tertiary referral practice for primary and complex hip replacement surgery, including hip resurfacing surgery and hip arthroplasty for young patients – performing approximately 450 Primary Total Hip Replacements per year. I perform around 70 hip revision procedures a year and have wide experience in the variety of reconstructive options. I have a regional referral practice for complex hip revision, periprosthetic fractures, infections and cases with major structural bone loss.
My clinical activities and outcomes are available for review in the UK National Joint Registry web site.
I am the ‘Hip chair’ of the East Midlands Specialist Orthopaedic Network (EMSON) which covers a population of around 4.5million for hip and knee revision and complex arthroplasty. This was set up as a pilot by NHS England to improve revision outcomes. Our pilot is now being used to set up similar networks throughout the UK (we won an AAOS award in 2018 for our work on this network).
I am invited to lecture, to discuss and to demonstrate my activities in hip surgery nationally and internationally. I have been invited to Chair numerous specialist post graduate hip courses, both in the United Kingdom and abroad.
Having started the Nottingham Hip Revision Course in 2007, I am proud of how the meeting has become such a popular event, attracting surgeons from all around the world. I have developed the programme for this course continuously and am delighted that many world-leading figures in hip surgery have accepted invitations to join the faculty of the Nottingham Course.
I have published on numerous topics surrounding primary, resurfacing and revision hip arthroplasty.
I am the immediate past President of the British Hip Society (BHS), having been on the BHS executive for a number of years. This has allowed me to contribute to the political discussions that surround joint replacement and hip surgery in the UK.
I became a member of the International Hip Society in 2018.
I was voted on to the Council of the British Orthopaedic Association in 2019.
I am active in hip research and involved in implant development in both primary hip arthroplasty, hip resurfacing and revision hip surgery with a number of orthopaedic implant companies. Having been part of a worldwide development team, I performed the first implantation of the Continuum and Trilogy IT socket system in Nottingham in 2009.
