About me

Mr Mangat is a Consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon based within Warwickshire. He specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of sports injuries and degenerative conditions, such as arthritis, of the shoulder, elbow, hand and wrist.

Mr Mangat was born and raised in Coventry, completing his secondary education at Bablake school. He then graduated in Medicine from the University of Birmingham in 2001. Having developed an early interest in orthopaedic surgery, he also completed a BSc in Anatomy (University College London and Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore). Mr Mangat joined the prestigious Birmingham Orthopaedic Training Programme which was followed by specialist upper limb fellowships at the internationally renowned Pulvertaft Centre (hand and wrist surgery) and the Liverpool Upper Limb Unit (shoulder and elbow surgery, under the direct guidance of Professor Peter Brownson, the then President of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society). During this time, he mastered advanced surgical techniques for disorders of the shoulder, elbow, hand and wrist. Mr Mangat was subsequently appointed as a substantive Consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon at South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust.

Mr Mangat has contributed significantly to medical literature by publishing numerous articles relating to orthopaedic surgery in prominent scientific journals. His expertise has been recognised by invitations to author several book chapters relating to trauma and orthopaedic surgery. He has also presented his work at major conferences to his peers, both within the UK and internationally. Mr Mangat is a reviewer for the prestigious ‘Shoulder and Elbow’ journal, providing critical appraisal of submitted medical articles from orthopaedic surgeons around the world.

Having developed an early interest in orthopaedic surgery as an undergraduate, Mr Mangat completed a BSc in Anatomy (University College London). His research on the acquisition of skilled motor movements (undertaken at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore) was awarded a first-class merit.

Mr Mangat is truly passionate about delivering high quality medical education and takes a lead in the delivery of clinical training. He has completed a PGCE in medical education (University of Birmingham) and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). He provides formal teaching in upper limb surgery to trainee orthopaedic surgeons from across the UK. He regularly performs assessment and appraisal of doctors at various stages of their career. He is a course convenor for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, providing formal training in the diagnosis and treatment of common musculoskeletal conditions. Mr Mangat is a keen educator of healthcare students and has been conferred the title of ‘Honorary Clinical Lecturer’ by the University of Warwick.

Mr Mangat is often praised for his excellent communication skills and takes the time to listen to the needs of his patients. He is passionate about ensuring all patients fully understand their diagnosis and the treatment options available to them. By maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of the latest techniques and developments in surgery of the upper limb, Mr Mangat is committed to offering a consistently high standard of care.

Mr Mangat enjoys keeping fit by regularly taking part in a variety of sports. His weekly 5-a side football matches with friends made at university have certainly stood the test of time! As a cyclist, he has completed several long-distance rides, raising money for charities such as University Hospitals Birmingham and Macmillan. He is an avid supporter of Coventry City Football Club, though this has been truly tested in more recent years! He enjoys spending precious time with his family and friends, realising the importance of a healthy work life balance on both his mental and physical wellbeing.
