About me

Dr Stables trained in Leeds, Glasgow, London and Oxford. He was appointed a Consultant in the Centre for Dermatology, Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) in 1999 and began working at the Nuffield Health Leeds Hospital in 2001.

During his training Dr Stables completed a Fellowship in Mohs Micrographic Surgery in London and Oxford. Mohs micrographic surgery is a technique used to remove some types of locally invasive skin cancers under microscopic control resulting in very high success rates, whilst sparing normal tissues. He set up the first Mohs Surgery service in Yorkshire, at the LGI in 2002.

• MD Research Thesis on Topical Photodynamic Therapy for Skin Cancer and set up the first Dermatology Photodynamic Therapy Service in Yorkshire (Leeds) in 1999.
• During training completed a Fellowship in Mohs Micrographic Surgery in Oxford and set up the first Mohs Surgery Service in Yorkshire (Leeds) in 2002.
• Set up Local Skin Cancer Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) and Regional Specialist Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer MDT Meeting and MDT Clinic in 2007. MDT Lead 2007-2014 and Co-Chair 2014-2022.
• Service Team Lead for Skin Cancer, Leeds Teaching Hospitals 2014–2020.
• Director Leeds Foundation for Dermatological Research (2001-date) and Secretary (2013-2017).
• Published widely on General Dermatology, Photodynamic Therapy and Skin Cancer related topics.
• Member of National Committee of the British Society for Dermatological Surgery from 1995-2014, serving as President 2011-13.
• Member of British Association of Dermatologists National Skin Cancer Committee 2016-18.
• Member of British Association of Dermatologists National Clinical Services Committee 2018-2022.

Dr Stables has a special interest in the diagnosis and management of benign, pre-malignant skin lesions and skin cancer. Dr Stables performs general skin screening checks and mole checks. The diagnosis of skin cancer involves clinical diagnostic skills, dermoscopy and sometimes lesion biopsy or excision. There are a number of different treatment modalities for skin cancer including topical treatments, cryosurgery, photodynamic therapy, surgical treatments and radiotherapy.
