About me

Dr Wycliffe Mbagaya has been a Consultant in Metabolic Medicine since 2014, specialising in cholesterol disorders, diabetes, inherited metabolic diseases, cardiometabolic medicine, electrolyte imbalance and laboratory medicine.

He sees patients with high cholesterol, triglycerides, prediabetes and metabolic syndrome, disorders of electrolytes and investigation of rare metabolic disorders. He manages patients with conditions such as trimethylaminuria and malodour syndromes, unexplained fatigue and exclusion of metabolic disorders. He also advises patients and other doctors on the implications of blood tests.

He also sees patients with metabolic effects of antipsychotics and antidepressants; investigation of metabolic disorders and metabolic optimisation. He has an interest in management of nutritional and mineral deficiencies such as vitamin D deficiency, hypomagnesaemia, phosphate deficiency.

Dr Mbagaya is a Clinical Director for Laboratory Medicine at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Trust. He is an honorary senior lecturer at University of Bristol and provides teaching and mentorship for students and doctors in training. He is Year 3 Lead for University of Bristol North Somerset Academy, and regularly teaches on national GP courses on laboratory medicine and metabolic disorders.

Dr Mbagaya is involved in number of clinical trials for newer medications for treatment of high cholesterol, reducing heart attacks and strokes. He has been an early adopter of newer injectable cholesterol lowering medications and newer diabetes medications such as GLP-1 agonists.
