After obtaining the Fellowship of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1990 he went to Boston, USA for a two year Surgical Research Fellowship at Harvard Medical School. Upon his return he was appointed Lecturer in Surgery at St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School. He completed his higher surgical training in the North West Thames Region, where he held Senior Registrar posts at Central Middlesex, St Mary’s, The Hammersmith and Charing Cross Hospitals.
Thereafter he gained appointment to St Mark’s Hospital for Diseases of the Colon and Rectum for an additional year of sub-specialist colorectal training, which concluded with a further overseas fellowship in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto, Canada.
Mr Gatzen was appointed as the first Specialist Colorectal Surgeon to Wycombe and Amersham Hospitals in May 1999 and following the merger with Stoke Mandeville Hospital leads the colorectal cancer multidisciplinary team for Buckinghamshire Healthcare.
He has a particular interest in laparoscopic general and colorectal surgery, day-case gallbladder and hernia surgery, and bowel cancer screening.
