About me

Bashar completed his basic Ophthalmology training in the West Midlands and the Bristol region, followed by higher specialist training in Aberdeen. He further specialised in Medical Retina and ocular inflammation through fellowship training in Bristol. In 2017, he was appointed as a consultant Ophthalmologist at Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre (BMEC), a renowned tertiary referral centre. In 2022, Bashar moved to London after becoming a consultant at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He became fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth-London) in 2013.
His primary subspecialty interest lies in medical diseases related to the retina and ocular inflammation/uveitis. In addition to his focus on these areas, Bashar actively practices in general and acute Ophthalmology. He previously served as the Clinical Lead for emergency eye care at BMEC from January 2018 to January 2020, elevating standards through the introduction of protocols, guidelines, and audits. The BMEC Eye casualty is one of the largest of its kind in the UK.
Bashar then assumed the role of College Tutor at BMEC, upholding the Royal College of Ophthalmologists' standards to promote excellence and safety in training the upcoming generation of Ophthalmologists.
Bashar's expertise spans a wide range of medical retinal conditions, from common issues like Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy to complex and rare cases. His subspecialty interest in Uveitis uniquely positions him to diagnose and manage challenging cases that intersect between uveitis and retinal diseases. Uveitis, although relatively uncommon, primarily affects working-age individuals and requires a comprehensive and thorough approach.
A passionate educator, Bashar completed a Master’s degree in Medical Education from Warwick University. He conducted Training the Trainers workshops abroad and presented at various local, national, and international conferences. He has multiple publications in peer reviewed journals and participated in many multi-centre studies during his tenure at Bristol Eye Hospital underlining his commitment to staying abreast of the latest advancements in his field.
Bashar says: My ethos is compassionate care to patients whether in the NHS or in the private sector. I share everything with my patients, and they are the centre of my care. Eye conditions can be very worrying and a quick access to an experienced specialist can be reassuring and sometimes sight saving. I will do my very best to put you at ease, explain your condition or symptoms and give you the care I expect a member of my family to receive.
