About me

Mr Paul Parker is the British Army's most senior Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon. He and his team can provide a comprehensive assessment in the diagnosis and management (both conservatively and operatively) of injuries of the knee, foot and ankle.

Mr Parker's specialises in lower limb sports medicine, and soft tissue knee and ankle reconstruction. Having performed ACL surgery and revision ACL surgery for over 24 years, both in the NHS and privately, Mr Parker is an expert in his field. Ankle arthroscopy, a procedure not carried out at many hospitals is also a keen interest. The particular requirements and specific injury patterns of military personnel mean that Mr Parker has extensive experience of these procedures.

Mr Parker's interests also include the more general wear and tear problems with the knee, ankle, foot and toes, such as bunions and knee or ankle instability. He is also known nationally for his treatment of plantar fasciitis, and is keen to use modern joint preservation techniques to prolong the life of the knee and ankle, and avoid joint replacement surgery.

Mr Parker qualified in medicine from Queen’s University Belfast in 1985. After overseas military service in Central America and Germany, he trained as an orthopaedic surgeon in London, Edinburgh and the US, and became a consultant orthopaedic surgeon in 1998. Mr Parker's NHS practice commenced at the Duchess of Kent Hospital in Catterick, North Yorkshire, before moving to the newly acquired Military Defence Hospital Unit at The Friarage Hospital in Northallerton. He worked between the Friarage Hospital and James Cook University Hospital until 2012.

As well as being a Consultant, Mr Parker is also a Colonel in the British Army and in 2012 his NHS practice moved to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, (the UK's biggest level 1 trauma centre), which is now a weekly commute from his home in North Yorkshire.

Mr Parker is a keen skier and runner and has been a pitch side doctor for the 2015 Rugby World Cup, and consulting orthopaedic surgeon for Middlesbrough Football Club games. Having served on over 15 operational tours with the military, Mr Parker has an excellent understanding of the needs of the 'soldier athlete' and routinely treats military personnel from all over the UK and overseas.

Paul Parker Orthopaedics covers a wide area of the North East of England and the Midlands, with Mr Parker holding regular clinics at Circle Health Group's Woodlands Hospital in Darlington, and The Priory Hospital in Birmingham.
