About me

Hello my name is Judy and I have 40 years of experience working within the area of health care, the last 10 years as a psychotherapist. I have experience of working across all age groups and can offer a variety of psychological approaches to meet your individual needs.
My background is in mental health and my core profession is a Registered Mental Health Nurse. I gained a qualification in Grief Counselling in 2002 with Teesside Hospice which I incorporated into my clinical practice. In 2007 I Gained a Bachelor of Arts in Psychological Therapies, specialising in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) for anxiety, depression and psychosis. In 2009 I did further post graduate training in CBT for Anxiety Disorders. I am also a qualified CBT Supervisor and have supervised trainee CBT therapists. I have been a fully accredited CBT practitioner with the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) since 2011. CBT is recognised as the gold standard for depression and anxiety disorders.
If you struggle with emotional regulation, are impulsive or find interpersonal relationships difficult then Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) can be very helpful. DBT is useful for a range of conditions. I am also trained in DBT prolonged exposure which helps people to process trauma using DBT skills.
If you have problems associated with low self-esteem, are highly self-critical or struggle with feelings of guilt and shame then Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) could be helpful. I have advanced training in CFT and have found this is useful across a range of problems.
I also have advanced skills in Meta-Cognitive therapy (MCT) which can help with anxiety, particularly excessive worry. I have developed and ran therapy groups based on MCT.
I also offer Mindfulness based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) which can be used for both physical and mental health problems.
You can choose a specific therapy or take an integrative approach which is using elements of different approaches. This is something we can work out together. I am very flexible in my approach to therapy and will recommend anything that I feel will work for you. Therapy is very much a partnership and a shared way of working.
I qualified as a Registered Mental Health Nurse in 1976 and worked for many years with older people, eventually becoming a Modern Matron in 2006
In 2002 I gained a certificate in Grief Counselling and ran an outpatient clinic for patients and carers.
In 2005 I gained a Diploma in Higher Education in Health Care before commencing my degree in Psychological Therapies, gaining my Bachelor of Arts in 2007.
In 2009 I moved briefly into Primary Care whilst completing my post graduate qualifications in CBT for Anxiety Disorders and Clinical Supervision for CBT. I then moved into the newly formed Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) and worked with this service for 6 years as a High Intensity Therapist
Latterly I have worked in a secondary care community team as a Psychological Therapist providing psychological therapies to those suffering from complex and chronic mental health conditions.
