About me

I was the lead Spinal Surgeon in a busy spinal unit of 4 consultants but currently involved in the restructuring of spinal care in Cheshire and Merseyside to provide a single service. This is currently led by The Walton Centre for Neurosciences in Liverpool. My fellowship training was in Nottingham where I developed a particular interest in degenerative disease of the spine, spinal biomechanics and their relationship to painful conditions of the spine. Having developed skills in interbody fusion I naturally moved into disc replacement surgery and flexible stabilisation techniques. I have performed lumbar disc replacement for 20 years and cervical disc replacement for 14 years. We are in the process of publishing the results of longterm follow up on both Lumbar and Cervical Disc Replacement, having presented the results at International meetings. I have been involved in teaching these procedures world wide and am involved in the continual development of the prostheses and techniques. I have also been involved in the development of posterior dynamic stabilisation procedures, both interspinous devices and pedicle based systems. I am on the design and evaluation team for a new, multilevel, dynamic spinal stabilisation system in collaboration with colleagues from Germany, Australia and Italy.
I have over 12 years experience of Lateral Interbody Fusion (XLIF) in deformity, infection and revision surgery. I am a member of SOLAS.
More recently I have renewed my interest in sacroiliac joint pain and it's treatment, including surgery. I have extensive experience of iFuse which was the preferred method of minimally invasive SI Joint fusion but now use screw in threaded cages as they are more controlled.
I have an interest in Coccydinia and am a listed surgeon on Coccyx.org
