About me
Mr Alvand’s practice focuses entirely on knee surgery and he is one of the highest volume revision knee surgeons in England based on the National Joint Registry. He has particular expertise in:
- Unicompartmental (partial) knee replacement
- Total knee replacement
- Revision (re-do) knee replacement surgery
- Management of infected knee replacements (prosthetic joint infection)
- Arthroscopic (keyhole) knee surgery
Mr Alvand graduated from University of London and completed his orthopaedic training on the Oxford programme. He completed a PhD (DPhil) at the University of Oxford which focused on improving training methods for unicompartmental knee replacement surgery. He was appointed to the prestigious post of NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer at the University of Oxford in 2015, and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in 2017. He undertook two post-CCT sub-specialist clinical fellowships focusing on complex hip and knee surgery in Oxford and Stanmore (Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital). He was a European Bone & Joint Infection Society Travelling Fellow in 2017 and also completed a Fellowship focusing on peri-prosthetic joint infection at the Rothman Institute (Philadelphia, USA) with Prof. J Parvizi.
Research:
Abtin has a strong academic background with numerous peer-reviewed scientific publications as well as national/international presentations. He is a regular invited guest lecturer at these meetings. Abtin was invited faculty and member of the International Consensus Group for the management of peri-prosthetic joint infection and has recently been invited to join the UK Revision Knee Surgery and Peri-prosthtic Joint Infection Working Groups with the aim of improving care delivery in these domains. His research focuses on:
- Improving teaching methods, surgical performance, and clinical outcome in unicompartmental knee replacement
- Management of peri-prosthtic joint infection
- Revision knee surgery
- Use of simulation-based surgical education and virtual reality techniques to teach arthroscopic and joint replacement surgery to orthopaedic trainees.
