About me

Aris Konstantopoulos is a consultant ophthalmologist at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. He reviews patients in the private sector at the Spire Southampton Hospital and Nuffield Health Wessex Hospital (Eastleigh).

He specialises in refractive cataract surgery and lens replacement surgery with toric and multifocal lenses, laser eye surgery (LASIK, SMILE, PRESBYOND laser blended vision) and treatments of the cornea (corneal transplantation, collagen-cross-linking, PTK, pterygium surgery).

He graduated from the University of Glasgow and completed his ophthalmology training in hospitals of the Oxford and Wessex Deaneries. He then completed 2 years of advanced training (fellowship) on ‘Cornea and external eye disease’ at University Hospital Southampton and the University of Southampton. His research focused on how to use optical coherence tomography imaging for diagnosis of conditions of the cornea; this led to the award of a PhD and numerous awards.

Aris subspecialised further in refractive surgery and lamellar corneal transplantation with a fellowship at the Singapore National Eye Centre, one of the most advanced and prestigious institutions in the world. Transferring these skills and knowledge back to the UK, he has now incorporated new ideas and practices into treatment for conditions of the cornea, corneal transplantation and refractive surgery.

Research interests

Arisâ€™ doctorate research focused on the clinical applications of optical coherence tomography imaging of the cornea. His findings have been adopted internationally, including by the world-renowned Singapore Eye Research Institute.

Building on his interest in ophthalmic imaging, he is currently involved and interested in research on laser refractive surgery treatments, imaging and screening for keratoconus, and novel corneal graft techniques.
