About me

I am a Consultant Knee Surgeon specialising in the treatment of disorders of the knee. My practice includes the management of sports injuries, anterior knee pain, patellar instability and arthritis.

I deliver a modern, patient specific approach to soft tissue injuries of the knee and regularly manage athletes from a broad spectrum of sports including football, rugby, CrossFit, MMA and motorsport.

I offer solutions for early arthritis from biological joint injections, cartilage regeneration and osteotomy surgery.

For patients with advanced (bone on bone) arthritis my philosophy is to only replace the diseased area of the arthritic knee. This is reflected by the volume of partial and patellofemoral knee replacements I perform.

My sub-specialty expertise in knee surgery was gained through two UK based knee fellowships, at the Wrightington Sports Knee Unit and The Avon Orthopaedic Centre, Bristol.

My time in Bristol was focused on developing the expertise to manage complex disorders of the patello-femoral joint (instability and anterior knee pain). I am one of a handful of fellowship trained surgeons in the North of England able to offer the Bereiter trochleoplasty technique for the management of severe dysplasia. This condition, which results in recurrent dislocations of the patella can only be effectively managed by deepening the groove at the end of the femur (trochlea). I offer a tertiary referral service for this condition in both my NHS and private practice.

I have a lifelong interest in sports and exercise, having played representative rugby into my 20s. I continue to train regularly, and enjoy weightlifting, cycling and the occasional triathlon or half marathon. I have personal experience of the dedication and commitment required to rehabilitate from serious injury and to return to competitive sport. My practice is focused on evidence based and innovative surgical techniques, with the goal of optimising function and return to play or competition.

I pride myself on taking the time to listen to and examine my patients, bringing together my broad experience to help each patient understand their diagnosis and tailor a personalised treatment plan to suit their circumstances. I believe strongly in exploring all the available treatment options, from rehabilitation with a specialist knee physiotherapist, to biological knee injections, and where appropriate arthroscopic or open surgical intervention.
