About me

Mr Michael Toma is a general ophthalmologist with a special interest in small incision phacoemulsification refractive cataract surgery, cornea, lid and ocular surface disease, medical retina disease and lacrimal disorders. He has extensive experience in cataract surgery having performed over 12,000 procedures to date utilizing standard lens implants as well as a full range of premium lens implants to achieve minimal spectacle dependence. He also has expertise in the management of retinal diseases, including age related macula degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusions having set up and managed the intravitreal therapy service in his NHS base. Management of retinal disease involves full evaluation with modern as well as established diagnostic techniques including Ocular Coherence Tomography(OCT), Fluorescein angiograph (FFA) and Indocyanine Green Angiography (ICG). Mr. Toma offers treatment with the full range of Intravitreal injections including Lucentis , Eylea, Ozurdex and Iluvien. Mr. Toma also specializes in the treatment of lid disease e.g. blepharitis and chronic Meibomian disease as well as watery eyes. Mr. Toma in conjunction with his ENT colleague is the only ophthalmic surgeon in Hertfordshire offering Endoscopic Dacryocystorhinostomy for tear duct obstruction utilizing a telescopic approach through the nose which leaves no external skin scars and which can be performed under local anaesthesia/sedation and both sides operated on at the same time
Mr Toma graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1983. He was trained on the North London Deanery rotation for Ophthalmology and served a Fellowship in Corneal and External eye disease at Moorfields Eye Hospital.

He was appointed as Consultant Ophthalmologist at the East and North Herts NHS Trust in 1997. He has been the Clinical Director for his NHS department since 2009.
