About me

I am a Professor of Trauma and Orthopaedics at the University of Bristol and Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon. My specialist interests are in the treatment of hip and knee pain and degenerative conditions of the hip and knee such as osteoarthritis. I have particular expertise in complex hip replacements and revision hip replacements for difficult to treat problems such as infection, periprosthetic fracture, wear, loosening and hip replacements that have failed due to bearing problems (such as metal-on-metal and corrosion). I also specialise in orthopaedic trauma.

I take a holistic approach to the care of my patients, with the aim of ensuring they are relieved of pain and restored to the level of function they wish to achieve whether that be by non-surgical or surgical means. I take the time to ensure patients are aware of the various treatment options open to them and help my patients to choose the best treatment options for them with their goals and expectations at the heart of the care I deliver.

My training included some of the most highly regarded fellowships (higher surgical training) in the world including the Vancouver Fellowship in Lower Limb Reconstruction (hip and knee replacement) and Oncology and the Bristol Advanced Hip and Knee Fellowship. I was also the McMinn Scholar to the British Hip Society, a Royal College of Surgeons of England Research Fellow, a Stefan Galeski Travelling Fellow, a British Orthopaedic Association/Zimmer Travelling Fellow and a National Institute of Health Research Clinical Lecturer.

I am a very active researcher having published over 180 peer-reviewed papers and co-edited one of the landmark Orthopaedic textbooks (Apley and Solomon's System of Orthopaedics and Trauma). My research focus is on improving outcomes for patients undergoing Orthopaedic treatment and range from the introduction of new treatments, such as stem cell therapy, to the analysis of large national datasets and multinational clinical trials. I led the development of musculoskeletal teaching for the new medical school curriculum at the University of Bristol. I am co-director for the MSc in Orthopaedic Research Methods at the Univeristy of Bristol and sit on the Research Committees of the British Hip Society, British Orthopaedic Association and National Joint Registry. I supervise a large number of doctoral students and research at the University of Bristol, NHS Trusts in Bristol and externally at a number of other Universities.
