Consultant in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Critical Care

Area of Practice:
Cardiac and thoracic anaesthesia, critical care and pain medicine.

Special Clinical Interests
Anaesthesia for patients with congenital cardiac disease. Level 4 organ support. Management of acute pain after cardiothoracic surgery.

Research Interests
Interested primarily in population-based data handling and meta-analysis.
Special interest in research into the management of acute post-surgical pain, the use of adjuvant regional anaesthetic techniques and the use of pre-emptive analgesia.
Secondary interest in the quantification of coagulation, particularly the role of near patient testing systems.
Co-ordinator for the national resternotomy audit. Local data handler for perioperative intravenous iron to treat anaemia in major surgery (PREVENTT) trial.

Training and Education
Trained at Royal Free and University College medical school. Completed early training in the South Thames region and moved to the North West in 2010.
Completed specialist anaesthetic training in 2017 and undertook a fellowship in adult congenital cardiothoracic anaesthesia and critical care in The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. This allowed development of skills in the management of highly complex adult congenital cardiac surgery, thoracic transplantation and the management of extracorporeal cardio-respiratory support systems (both ventricular assist devices, VV and VA ECMO).
