About me

If you wish to enquire about an appointment, please email me at helen@flowpsychology.co.uk and leave your telephone number so that I can contact you after my clinic.

I'm currently working at my Cardiff City Centre Office during daytime hours, Monday to Friday.

I qualified in Clinical Psychology in 1999 and prior to starting my own full-time practice in 2018, worked at Consultant Psychologist level in the NHS for 14 years. My most recent NHS post was Professional Lead for Psychology. I have experience within adult mental health and older people's mental health services.

My office is based in the city centre, with easy access from Cardiff Queen Street Station and Knox Road Car Park. I have a lot of experience working with university students and my consulting room can be reached on foot from the University. I have an interest in assisting busy working people to realign their work-life balance within the context of increasing organisational demands.

Therapeutically I am a cognitive behavioural therapist, but I recognise that sometimes this approach has limitations and often successfully treat people who have previously found CBT unhelpful. My clinical approach is enhanced with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, which is a newer form of CBT. This approach enhances CBT treatments, because there is not just the focus on managing mental health difficulties such as difficult thoughts, emotions and past traumas, but also keeps an eye to the future and covers life in general: how you would ideally like to live your life? My job is to help you to envisage how you would like your life to be and we can work together to see how we can remove obstacles that might be getting in the way.

I am also trained in EMDR, which is a NICE evidenced treatment for people with post-traumatic stress disorder. For post-traumatic stress I can also offer trauma-focused CBT, which is another NICE recommended treatment for PTSD.

After an initial assessment, I will explain all evidence based treatment options that I am able to provide for you and you can chose the approach which you think fits best with your way of thinking, your circumstances and your life-style.

Please drop me an email if you would like a call back. helen@flowpsychology.co.uk
