About me

About me:
I have been working in Mental Health Services for over 20 years now. Earlier work involved paid and voluntary experiences within Cancer Hospices, Children's Homes and the Samaritans Organisation.

Presently I work as a Clinical Psychologist both in the private sector (my company name is Thistle Psychology Services) and for the NHS, Adult Mental Health and Intellectual Disability Services.

My training and experience covers working with people across the age span, ranging from children to older adults, throughout a wide array of psychological difficulties and levels of abilities.

Most common difficulties people present with include anxiety disorders (e.g. panic disorders, phobias, social anxiety and post traumatic stress disorder), low mood and depressive disorders, Bipolar disorder, low self-esteem / confidence, bereavement, loss, relationship difficulties, anger management and transition. This is just a few examples of the range of difficulties that I often see people with.

I also have a vast amount of experience within the Intellectual / Learning Disability population – specialist work includes working with people on the Autistic Spectrum, Mild to Profound Learning Disabilities, Down Syndrome, Dementia, Behaviours that Challenge (often known as ‘Challenging Behaviour) and any other organic or environmental intellectual disability / difficulty.

Specialist service:
Due to my origins, my language skills, namely fluency in Urdu, Punjabi, Hindi and Arabic (classical – read only) has enabled me to gain valuable experience in working therapeutically and clinically with clients without the aid of an interpreter.

A multi-lingual therapeutic approach can be incredibly valuable to both clients and staff teams working with them; clients feel able to communicate in their own language without restraint and staff teams potentially gain a better understanding of the person they are supporting.

Maximising the benefits of being multi-lingual means that I have the ability to communicate cross culturally in several languages, thus making psychology accessible to a population that traditionally has had limited access.
