About me

Dr Mehta is a Consultant in Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) and the Lead Women's Performance Doctor at the Football Association, working as the Team Doctor for the England Women's Football team.

He qualified in 2003 from Kings College London and initially trained and worked in General Practice. He completed a Masters in Sport and Exercise Medicine (Distinction) and subsequently went on to complete a 4 year specialist training programme in SEM on the prestigious London rotation.

Dr Mehta has extensive experience in treating elite and recreational male and female athletes from a variety of sports and worked as a Sports Doctor at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and more recently as the Team Doctor for the GB Women’s Football Team at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. His main sporting interest is football medicine and he has worked in the Premier League and for both the England Senior Men’s and Women’s football teams. He has attended three world cups (FIFA Women's World Cups- France 2019 and Canada 2015 and FIFA Men's U20 World Cup- Colombia 2011), 1 European Championship (UEFA Women' s Championship, Netherlands 2017) and is also currently the Team Doctor to Reading FC in the Championship.

Dr Mehta translates his experience in working with elite athletes to providing all his patients with the same level of care and detail to help improve their pain and return to their chosen activities. He prides himself on ensuring all patients have a detailed clinical assessment, supplementing this with the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound scanning to enable an accurate diagnosis to be made and an appropriate treatment plan implemented. He understands patients’ desire to return to their physical activity levels and sports as soon as possible following any injury and will work with them closely to achieve this.

Dr Mehta is passionate about research and teaching which ensures he stays up to date with the latest knowledge and treatments. He is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Queen Mary’s University of London on the MSc in Sport and Exercise Medicine and has published and presented his research both nationally and internationally.

His main areas of expertise are:

1) Diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound and ultrasound guided injections
2) Lower limb injuries affecting the hip and groin, knee and ankle
3) Non-surgical management of osteoarthritis
4) Female athlete health- including the management of menstrual cycle related symptoms affecting performance and bone stress injuries.
5) Shoulder pain – specifically adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder), shoulder impingement/rotator cuff-related injuries, acromio-clavicular joint injury
6) Tendon problems including achilles and patella tendinopathy, tennis and golfers elbow and plantar fasciitis
