About me

I am an ENT Consultant surgeon specialising in Adult and Paediatric Ear, Nose & Throat Surgery based at University Hospitals Bristol working at St Michaels hospital, Bristol Royal Infirmary and the Royal Hospital for Children in Bristol, as well as working privately at the Spire Bristol Hospital.

I was President of the section of Otology (Ears) at the Royal Society of Medicine for 2020/2021 and was President of the British Society of Otology (Ear Surgeons) from 2018 to 2020.

I work with both adults and children, and I have sub-specialty interests in the management and surgery of ear diseases and nose and sinuses surgery. In addition I have sub-specialty experience in Paediatric ENT and have extensive experience in looking after young children. I am the Director and Founder of the West of England Cochlear Implant Programme, and also established the Tinnitus Clinic at Southmead Hospital.

I was appointed as a Consultant in 1994, and I have developed a specialist practice in complex ear disease and deafness, receiving many tertiary referrals from other Consultants. I have also developed a specialist practice in nose and sinus surgery and all aspects of paediatric ENT. I continue to carry out general ear, nose and throat clinics and surgery as well.

I have developed very close links with a specialist team of Audiologists, Audiological scientists and Hearing and balance Therapists to provide the best multidisciplinary care for my "Ear" patients.
In addition, I have developed very close links with many other professionals including Voice Therapists, dedicated theatre nurses and very experienced adult and paediatric Anaesthetists, as well as other Consultants, to provide a multi-disciplinary team approach to my patients’ care. clinics. All my clinics have audiological support for hearing tests.

I come from a medical family and I qualified in medicine from the University of Bristol in 1981. After House jobs in Bristol, I spent a year teaching anatomy at the University of Bristol. I completed my basic surgical training at the Bristol Royal Infirmary and the Bristol Children’s Hospital.

My specialist surgical training in ENT was carried out at University College Hospital and the Middlesex Hospitals, London, as well as Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.

I had additional sub-specialist training with a Fellowship in Paediatric ENT at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, a Fellowship in Otology and Cochlear Research at the University of Michigan in the USA, and a Fellowship in Rhinoplasty, Facial Plastic Surgery and Sinus Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas.

I am very involved in the training of ENT Surgeons, and I was a member of the Royal College of Surgeons Specialist advisory committee for training registrars in Otolaryngology from 2012 -2017. I was previously the Chairman of the Regional Specialist Training Committee. I have been very involved in clinical research, particularly related to cochlear implants and regularly lecture, both nationally, and internationally.

I am a family man and an enthusiastic skier, sailor and mountain walker.
