About me

Prior to medical school Mr Smith completed a BSc in Anatomy and an MSc in Sports Medicine. After two years of junior doctor jobs Mr Smith undertook ten years of surgical training based in Edinburgh. He was awarded the fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh in 2011. Before starting work as a consultant Mr Smith completed four specialist fellowships. These included six months at the Exeter Knee Reconstruction Unit and an AO trauma fellowship in Seattle, a unit widely recognised as the home of foot and ankle trauma surgery. He was later awarded a twelve month fellowship at the world renowned Vancouver Trauma Unit where he was taught both trauma and sports injury surgery by world leaders in their respective fields. Finally he spent six months at the Fortius Clinic, London with Mr J Calder specialising in foot & ankle surgery during which time he helped treat many premiership level professional athletes.
Mr Smith has published and presented his research widely at both national and international meetings. He is an invited reviewer for the major British Orthopaedic journal, the JBJS. He has provided lectures and authored book chapters on various topics related to the foot & ankle, trauma and sports surgery.
His NHS practice is dedicated to foot and ankle surgery and is based at the NNUH.
