About me
Ann is a Counselling Psychologist who works with individuals, couples and families. The main factor that brings people to psychological therapy is experiencing emotional difficulties, with distressing psychological symptoms and behavioural difficulties. Distress can be precipitated by a range of life events including burnout, unexpected injury, disability and loss, relationship breakdown, trauma, abuse and characterlogical difficulties linked to earlier life and development. Diagnostically Ann’s work incorporates a broad range of disorders, including depression, anxiety (generalised, social and panic), PTSD, emotional dysregulation (Bipolar and Personality Disorders), developmental trauma, adjustment disorder, substance issues, addictive and risky behaviours, self-harm and suicide, relationship issues, self-esteem and bereavement.
As a psychologist Ann has 13 years mental health experience with the NHS. She started working in private practice in 2014 and is now working full-time as a private practitioner. She embraces the understanding that development matters which takes place across the lifespan. She welcomes recent scientific research especially in neuroscience which provides scientific evidence of the effectiveness and efficacy of psychological therapies and the importance of the psychotherapeutic relationship. Psychological therapies are not just a ‘talking’ therapy but could influence the shifts and changes necessary to develop and renew psychological and emotional robustness and wellbeing at a biological level.
Ann’s approach to psychological therapy is to maintain a relational (social and emotional) understanding of human distress. The premise is that the ‘illness’ is not placed within the individual mind, but relates to the social context of the individual’s life story, namely a complex tapestry of past, present and future inter-subjective experiences. In a session with Ann she tends to focus on the here-and-now, while making links to the past, challenging unhelpful patterns of behaviours, thoughts and feelings. She recognises the important of maintaining a curious, active, explicit, collaborative, non-directive, not-knowing and experiential stance to the psychotherapeutic conversation. Using this approach, Ann will steadily explore the interpersonal context of the self and other, while maintaining an emphatically validating understanding of the individual patient subjective experience
