About me

Mr Simon Blackburn joined Great Ormond Street Hospital as a Consultant Neonatal and Paediatric Surgeon in 2014.

Simon’s main area of clinical interest is in gastrointestinal surgery as well as treating children born with abnormalities of the gastrointestinal tract, diaphragm and abdominal wall. In his clinical practice at Great Ormond Street he contributes to specialist services for children with Cloacal Anomalies, Chronic Intestinal Pseudo-obstruction, Functional Bowel Disorders and Feeding for Children with Neuromuscular Disorders.

Having taught anatomy throughout his postgraduate training, Simon developed a keen interest in teaching and gained a Masters in Surgical Education from Imperial College London in 2012. He is currently Education Lead for Technology Enhanced Learning at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Simon’s undergraduate medical education was at Guy’s King’s and St Thomas’ Medical School. His postgraduate training was in South East England and included posts in Brighton, Great Ormond Street Hospital, Chelsea and Westminster, Southampton and St George’s Hospitals.

Simon became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2013, and was awarded the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons Medal for his outstanding performance in the intercollegiate examination.

Areas of interest

Simon has a specialist interest in gastrointestinal surgery particularly in treating children born with abnormalities of the gastrointestinal tract and abdominal wall. He also works within specialist teams contributing to the care of complex conditions such as Cloacal Anomalies, Chronic Intestinal Pseudo-Obstruction and Functional Bowel Disorders.

Simon also treats more commonly occurring conditions including hernias, hydroceles, undescended testes, umbilical hernias and performs circumcision for medical reasons.
