About me

I am a Consultant General and Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary (HPB) Surgeon, Clinical Lead for General Surgery at Manchester Royal Infirmary, and Director of The Gallstone Clinic, Manchester Hernia and Manchester Surgical Clinic.

I am an Expert Reviewer for BUPA for Gallstones, Gallbladder Removal, Abdominal Hernias, Pancreatic Cancer, Abdominal pain and Adhesions. I am also the Expert Reviewer for the British Medical Journal (BMJ) Best Practice for Gallstones, Acute Cholecystitis and Acute Cholangitis.

I am very honoured to be the President-Elect of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI). I am also on the Surgical Specialty Board in General Surgery for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

My private rooms are at Spire Manchester Hospital, Spire Cheshire Hospital in Warrington, and Spire Regency Hospital in Macclesfield, Cheshire..

I graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Biochemistry and then went on to graduate with Honours in Medicine from the University of Manchester in 2000. I completed a period of research and was awarded a Doctorate of Medicine for my thesis on Sepsis in 2008. I completed my Higher Surgical Training in the North Western Deanery and have worked in London, Cambridge, Nottingham and Manchester before taking up a Consultant position at St James’s University Hospital in Leeds where I practiced advanced pancreatic, gallbladder and bile duct surgery for 5 years. I returned to Manchester in August 2018 to take up a Consultant post at Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

I provide elective and emergency general surgery as well as being part of the regional HPB unit specialising in the investigation and management of gallstones and gallbladder problems, pancreatitis, liver and pancreatic cysts and tumours.

I have a special interest in advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery of the gallbladder and bile duct, open and laparoscopic hernia surgery, investigation and management of abdominal pain and liver and pancreas disorders.

I have a great interest in day-case gallbladder surgery and improving patient satisfaction whilst in hospital. My other passion is Medical Education; I thoroughly enjoy training the doctors of tomorrow.

I am also interested in Research, I am the Principal Investigator of randomised clinical trials, and am involved in National Quality Improvement projects to help improve the lives of Manchester's residents and shape the NHS of the future. I am the Lead Surgeon for Manchester for the CHOLEQuIC Gallbladder QI Project from the Royal College of Surgeons of England where we have significantly improved the patient experience of emergency gallbladder surgery.

I am also leading on a number of Service Development projects in Greater Manchester to improve Emergency General Surgery in the conurbation.

Out of the workplace I enjoy cooking, travel, fine wine and racket sports. I have recently rekindled my enjoyment of golf and hope to improve my handicap.
