About me

Having graduated from King's College Hospital Medical School in 1979 and completed junior medical posts in London, Nick Rowell trained as a clinical oncologist at St Bartholomew's, University College and Mount Vernon Hospitals. He then completed an MD thesis at the Royal Marsden Hospital with research into tumour vasculature. In 1998, after seven years as Consultant and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Clinical Oncology at the Churchill Hospital in Oxford, he moved to a joint appointment between the Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton and the Kent Oncology Centre in Maidstone. This provided the opportunity to specialise further in the treatment of Head and Neck Cancer and Lung Cancer. In June 2000 he left the Royal Marsden to work solely at Maidstone until 2021.

During that time, he led the West Kent Head & Neck Cancer multidisciplinary team and was a member of the Skin Cancer and Thyroid Cancer multidisciplinary teams. He was personally responsible for supervising the treatment of those who needing radiotherapy and / or chemotherapy, also specialising in treatment of thyroid cancer with radioactive iodine.

Nick has been a member of several national committees in the areas of research, cancer treatment and treatment with radioactive isotopes. He has been an Editor of the Lung Cancer Group of the Cochrane Collaboration and a member of the group producing the NICE Lung Cancer Guidelines. Within Kent, at different times, he has led the Kent and Medway Head & Neck Cancer Disease Oriented Group (DOG) and was audit and research lead on this and the Thyroid Cancer DOG. He has held a number of management roles during his time in Maidstone. He continues to publish papers on Head & Neck and Thyroid Cancer.

Nick, a committed Christian, lives with his family near Sevenoaks.
