About me

I graduated from the University of Manchester in 1999, and after postgraduate training in Lancashire I became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of London in 2002, following which I started my specialist training in cardiology in Yorkshire. This comprehensive five-year programme led to training in all aspects of cardiology.

Between 2008 and 2010 I worked with Prof Patrick Serruys at the Thoraxcentre, Rotterdam, The Netherlands, undertaking research in new coronary stents and in the risk stratification of patients treated by coronary angioplasty (PCI). My PhD thesis entitled, ‘Risk Stratification in Patients Undergoing Percutaneous Coronary Revascularisation’ was awarded cum laude by the Erasmus University, Rotterdam in 2011.

In 2010 I became the Interventional Fellow at the University Hospitals of North Staffordshire, allowing intensive experience in all aspects of percutaneous coronary intervention. I performs virtually all my diagnostic and interventional cases trans-radially.

I was appointed as a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at East Lancashire NHS Trust in 2010. I perform approximately 600 angiogram/angioplasty procedures per year, and my annual inpatient and outpatient workload is well in excess of a thousand patients covering all aspects of cardiology including management of coronary heart disease, valvular heart disease, arrhythmias, hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, cardiomyopathies and heart failure.

I have served on several national committees including the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society research committee (2013-2017) and the National PCI audit steering committee (2016-2021). I was also the Greater Manchester NIHR Cardiovascular Speciality Co-Lead between 2015 until 2022. I currently act as a reviewer with the Royal College of Physicians invited review team.

I continue to do academic work and my research has led to the publication of over 190 papers in peer reviewed journals (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=scot+garg), 9 book chapters, together with numerous presentations at national and international meetings. I remain a peer reviewer for several cardiology journals, work on clinical trial event adjudication and am an Honorary Professor of Cardiology at the University of Central Lancashire, Preston.
