About me

Mr William Bartlett MBBS BSc MRCS FRCSEd (Tr&Orth) is an experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon practicing in North and Central London. His specialist interest is in the surgical and non-operative management of hip and knee complaints.

William began his medical career in 1994 at University College London. Later surgical training was in and around the capital. He undertook a subspecialty fellowship at The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore. Further training on cutting-edge techniques of joint preservation and minimally invasive replacement surgery was undertaken in: Presbyterian Hospital (Plano in Texas), New Albany Hospital (Ohio) and Chirurgish Orthopadische (Quickborn, Germany).

He sees a diverse spectrum of patients aged from young adults to the elderly. Many patients have active lifestyles including professional sports men & women. Mr Bartlett often also treats patients with more sedentary lifestyles. Indeed, he has gained a large experience of treating patients who have previously been denied surgery after being considered to be too old or due to problems such as obesity or significant medical conditions. In all groups, non-surgical treatment options will always be thoroughly explored initially, often through close working with expert physiotherapists, osteopaths, radiologists, sports physicians and rheumatologists.

When surgery is needed, Mr. Bartlett will offer each patient a highly personalised approach, ensuring that they remain firmly at the centre of the decision-making. When possible, modern bone and muscle preserving techniques including minimally invasive surgical approaches are utilised. Particular interests include the use of computer planned surgery (including techniques using bespoke 3-D printed cutting guides and robotic assisted surgery), custom made prostheses and partial joint replacement surgery.

He leads the enhanced recovery program within his NHS hospital and is committed to ensuring that each patient recovers from surgery as quickly, safely and fully as possible. He has performed over 2,000 elective hip and knee procedures though also enjoys the challenges of emergency trauma surgery. Currently, Mr Bartlett is the lead investigator of a £100,000 clinical study into the use of a newly developed hip replacement prosthesis. His research into biological forms of joint repair and the use of custom-made prostheses has been widely published (see below). He is responsible for training the next generation of Surgeons both through mentoring their progress in the operating theatre and by teaching on post-graduate courses (Royal College of Surgeons of England, Royal Society of Medicine and Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital). Mr Bartlett works as a reviewer to evaluate scientific manuscripts submitted to periodicals such as The Bone and Joint Journal.
