About me

I joined Velindre as a Consultant in March 2011, following eight years training in Medical Oncology in Leeds and the Yorkshire region. I have a special interest in the treatment of Breast Cancer, in particular the systemic management of advanced disease. I have completed a PhD in 2011 focusing on the development of drugs to target a protein-protein interaction for treatment of acute leukaemia, (Prof T.H.Rabbitts, University of Leeds).

Dr Simon Waters PhD is a Medical Oncologist specialising in the treatment of patients with breast cancer. Dr Waters studied Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Southampton, qualifying in 1998. He underwent General Medical training in the South of England, and Medical Oncology training in Yorkshire, and in 2008 won a Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research Clinical Research Training Fellowship which led to the award of a PhD from the University of Leeds. He completed specialist training at St James’s Institute of Oncology, Leeds and was appointed a Locum Consultant there in 2010. Dr Waters joined Velindre Cancer Centre in 2011 developing a special interest in the systemic management of advanced breast cancer, and is also a core member of the Aneurin Bevan Health Board (Royal Gwent) Breast Cancer Multidisciplinary Team. His research interests include late-phase evaluation of new treatments for breast cancer, and he is the Principal Investigator for several recruiting clinical trials in Cardiff and Newport. He has a strong focus on patient safety and is a member of the Velindre Systemic Anti-cancer Therapy Board.
