About me

Dr Adam Farmer was educated at Stonyhurst College in Lancashire. He trained at University College London, Barts and the London School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School.

He was awarded a BSc(Hons) in 1998 in human physiology with basic medical sciences and qualified with the degrees of MBBS in 2001 and gained membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 2004.

He undertook his specialist training in gastroenterology and general medicine in the West Midlands before moving to the internationally renowed Wingate Institute of Neurogastroenterology, Barts and the Royal London School of Medicine, where he performed a body of research funded by the Medical Research Council. During this time, he was awarded the degree of PhD at the University of London entitled “Human Psychophysiological Responses to Pain – The Development of Human Pain Endophenotypes”. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2017.

He currently works as a Consultant Gastroenterologist at the University Hospitals of North Midlands where he is the Clinical Director of Specialised Medicine. He also has academic positions at the Wingate Institute of Neurogastroenterology, Keele Medical School and the University of Aalborg in Denmark. He is the current chairman of the Neurogastroenterology and Motility Section of the British Society of Gastroenterology and is a member of the Rome V international consensus on the classification of functional gastrointestinal disorders. He has authored over 120 published articles, written 13 book chapters and has given lectures both nationally and internationally. He has coauthored a number of international clinical guidelines regarding the management and treatment of irritable bowel syndrome, functional dyspepsia, gastroparesis and opioid induced constipation.

His main clinical and academic interests concern all aspects of gastroenterology particularly the functional gastrointestinal and motility disorders which include irritable bowel syndrome chronic abdominal pain, heartburn/reflux and chronic constipation. He is also interested in the digestive symptoms that arise as a consequence of disorders that affect the whole body including diabetes and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

He is considered to be an international expert in his field having been awarded prestigious prizes from the American Society of Neurogastroenterology and Motility and the United European Gastroenterology Federation.
