About me

Mr Yashin Ramkissoon BSc MB BChir PhD MRCP FRCOphth is a Consultant Ophthalmologist, Cataract and Vitreo-Retinal Surgeon whose NHS practice is based at The Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield.

His areas of expertise include vitreo-retinal surgery (surgery for retinal detachment, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, advanced diabetic eye disease, vitreous haemorrhage and tractional maculopathy), cataract surgery (including complex cases), ocular trauma and general ophthalmology.

He graduated with distinction in Medicine as well as a PhD in Genetics from the University of Cambridge in 1997. During his career he has been awarded numerous prizes and scholarships including the Royal College of Ophthalmologists McCartney Prize for Pathology. He is a Member of the Royal College of Physicians and Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He completed his ophthalmic specialist training at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London where he also undertook Fellowship training in Vitreo-Retinal surgery (2007-2008) and Medical Retina (2008) before being appointed as Consultant in Sheffield in 2009.

He has published numerous articles in peer reviewed journals, co-authored book chapters on Cataract Surgery and Retinal Detachment and is actively involved in clinical research.

He is also Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Sheffield and an Educational Supervisor to junior ophthalmologists training in the Yorkshire and Humberside Deanery as well as a Microsurgical Skills Trainer for The Royal College of Ophthalmologists, London. In addition he is Teaching Lead for Undergraduate Ophthalmology at the University of Sheffield School of Medicine.

He has full specialist registration with the General Medical Council and is also a member of the following professional organizations: British & Eire Association of Vitreo-Retinal Surgeons, International Member of the American Association of Ophthalmologists.
